When you fill out your ballot this coming November, it’s likely you’ll be voting on a long list of items. Fifteen ballot initiatives have already been approved for signature gathering this summer, including one proposed by the Colorado Farm Bureau that is designed to ensure property owners are properly compensated if new laws or regulations negatively impact the value of their property.

WE NEED YOU to help us gather signatures for this initiative and protect Coloradan’s private property rights.

Signature gatherers are needed from State Senate Districts 1 and 35 (eastern plains down to the San Luis Valley), to gather signatures for this initiative.

The measure follows an initiative recently filed that sets random and increased setback requirements for oil and natural gas development and land use planning activities by counties that will diminish property values. The measure could be applied to provide compensation should a county attempt to regulate the types of crops that may be grown and impact the productive capacity of the land.

This good government measure aims to protect all private property from being devalued from policy created by local and state governments. Currently, your property must be deemed completely useless in order to receive compensation — being forced to cut your property in half because of a mandated trail or wellhead isn’t currently protected by our Constitution. The measure could also be applied to provide compensation should a county attempt to regulate the types of crops that may be grown and impact the productive capacity of the land. Without the ability to utilize their property to its fullest potential, farmers and ranchers lose their ability to use their land in the most profitable way.

“Your property is your property, and no one should be able to take that away from you,” said Chad Vorthmann, Executive Vice President of the Colorado Farm Bureau. “This is about protecting the Colorado way of life. Because taking private property is not the Colorado way.”
