The Colorado Farm Bureau Foundation has called for applications from farmers and ranchers impacted by the late spring blizzard that swept through Baca and Prowers counties, devastating crops and livestock. Any farmers and ranchers impacted by the storm who need help recovering some of their losses are urged to apply.

The severe blizzard dropped two feet of wet, heavy snow killing thousands of cattle and calves and destroying tens of thousands of acres of wheat crop in Baca county, the third largest wheat producing county in the state.

Since the disaster, Colorado Farm Bureau has raised more than $35,000 from partners and friends to help these producers regain some of what they have lost. Colorado Farm Bureau will distribute 100 percent of the funds raised directly to qualified applicants, aiding these producers as they face the aftermath of this natural disaster.

“Agriculture has banded together in during a time of great struggle for our neighbors to the southeast,” said CFB President Don Shawcroft. “We urge all those needing help recovering from this devastating storm to apply. Funds can be used to offset unanticipated expenses, insurance deductibles, direct losses or any other agricultural expense resulting from the blizzard.

While the damage from the storm is more than can completely be covered — with millions of dollars in damage and lost revenue in a community already stressed by low commodity prices — the funds distributed from the Foundation can help ease the burden.
