On June 27, the U.S. Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Climate held a field hearing in Burlington, CO concerning a hotter, drier future.
At the invitation of the subcommittee’s chairman, Senator Michael Bennet, President Currier served as a panelist to offer insight and suggestions to federal policymakers as to how they could structure drought assistance programs and provide tools for the benefit of farmers and additional stakeholders. As part of his testimony, President Currier said, “Water resource management must make sense for farmers’ and ranchers’ economic bottom line to be successful. There must be a balance between resource stewardship and economic viability. If farmers and ranchers are expected to take on the risk of modifying with new precision or conservation technologies, there must be incentives.” President Currier also emphasized the importance of rural economic development and investment by USDA in the communities where agriculture is rooted as an important part of the comprehensive plan for a hotter, drier future.
Thank you to Senator Bennet and Senator Marshall of Kansas for hosting yesterday’s important briefing.
